Red On The Red Carpet

The countdown to the 79th Academy Awards is on and you can bet that right now somewhere in L.A. some Hollywood starlet is getting prepped and pampered for tomorrow night’s big show. After all, pre-Oscar massages, facials, manicures, herbal wraps, and wax jobs are staples in the process of getting red carpet ready.

So what will we see Hollywood’s A-lister’s donning Sunday night? Aside from the obligatory “surprises” (remember Bjork’s swan dress), typically there are trends the stars follow for movie’s biggest night. For example, red on red. According to star stylists, you can expect to see a lot of red, red lips on this year’s red carpet. Recently, dark crimson lipstick has been popping up on Cameron Diaz and Beyonce’s puckers. Make-up artists say crimson is more dramatic and edgy than the traditional scarlet lips, which is why trendsetters from Ashley Olsen to Gwyneth Paltrow are sporting the “hot” new color. However, be warned, the dark look is not recommended for those with skin imperfections. Stylists say deep crimson needs to be worn carefully. They suggest adding a hint of blush (especially if you are fair-skinned) to avoid looking like Elvira. Also, if you are going to go dark around your mouth it’s important to keep your eye make-up to a minimum.

Hollywood’s leading ladies are not the only ones predicted to be sporting red on the red carpet tomorrow night. Many male actors are reportedly looking to show off their colorful sides as well. They can take their cue from “Blood Diamond” actor Djimon Hounsou who slipped a red shirt under his tailored suit at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Fashion watchers called his look: “Composed, a bit original and effortlessly elegant.” Other actors — like Will Smith and Forest Whitaker – have illustrated their individuality in years past pairing blue suits with fun red accents. Another sleek look… teaming a black suit with red cuff links.

And, I’m no psychic, but I have a feeling there may be a red dress or two being modeled on that famous crimson carpet tomorrow night… what do you think?
