Redecorating your kitchen does not have to be a big, expensive production. There are a few things that you can do to give your kitchen a whole new look without having to spend a great deal of money. They key is changing a couple “big” things or adding a few smaller finishing touches. Your kitchen can have a new look without an overhaul — and with out overhauling your finances.
Try a new coat of paint. It is amazing what a difference paint can make. You can repaint the walls or paint the cabinets. Paint is not that expensive, and if you do it yourself you can paint your kitchen walls for less than you might think. Get the whole family involved and you will have a great memory to go along with your kitchen’s new look. When you have wood cabinets, painting your walls helps bring out the rich colors in the woods, and emphasize your other accessories. Warm colors and pastels are very good for kitchens.
You can also paint your cabinets to give your kitchen a new look. If your cabinets are high quality wood (not just pressboard), however, you probably should stay away from the paint and just refinish them instead. Refinishing your wood cabinets can add a fresh look to your kitchen that even rivals actually painting your cabinets.
Make your own carved-look molding. Get real carved molding can be expensive. However, it is possible to get the same look for much, much less. All it requires is a little crafty know-how. You can use a salt dough recipe to create your moldings and appliqués. This is the same recipe that your kids probably use in school to make those Christmas decorations they bring home. All you have to do is make the dough, and then cut it into simple shapes. Ropes, leaves, and scrolls are among the easiest designs to cut, and are designs especially suited for the kitchen. Bake the dough shapes as directed. If you are using them as appliqués, to put on cabinets or around a window or doorway, prime and paint them and then use a glue gun to put them up.
Soften the kitchen with fabric. You do not need to buy expensive curtains and valances for your kitchen window if you make your own. Additionally, there are many stores that sell simple window coverings just perfect for the kitchen at low or clearance prices. Changing out the fabrics you already have will add a fresh look to your kitchen. If you do not have fabric in the kitchen, adding it can help you give your kitchen a more inviting look. You can even use flat twin sheets (sometimes for as little as three or four dollars) to create your window coverings or table clothes. And because most of our fabrics are machine washable, you don’t have to worry about food and grease; just toss it in the washer when you are ready to have them cleaned up.
