Reduce Potassium Intake

So there are other foods that a person with kidney disease should avoid or limit those foods contain potassium. Now you cannot just cut potassium out of your diet 100% potassium is a vital mineral in your body. Potassium helps keep your heart beating and that is good but if you have kidney disease (even if you still have 2 kidneys) your kidneys will have a hard time filtering out the un-needed potassium and it can cause problems.

When kidneys are impaired you do need to watch your intake of potassium so you should limit your eating of bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, yogurt, milk, chocolate. If you are going to eat a food high in potassium such as potatoes you can leach them and that helps remove some of the potassium.

For example if you love potatoes and you don’t want to cut them out of your diet all the way you can peel and cut the potatoes up, place them in a pan of water and let them soak for at least 2 hours we do ours for 3-4 hours. When the time is up and you are ready to cook the potatoes pour the pan into a strainer and rinse them off. After that you can go ahead and fill that pan back up and start cooking your potatoes. When you let the peeled and chopped potatoes soak you are removing some of the potassium and therefor make them easier for your kidneys to process.

Now you are not going to leach your milk, chocolate or bananas but if you cut back on consuming these items and you leach your potatoes you are reducing your potassium intake and that will help your kidneys. My husband loves milk I mean next to his dark colored sodas milk was his favorite drink of choice. He always says milk is good for you, well it is, there are many vitamins and minerals that are great for your body but if you have kidney disease too much milk can cause damage to your kidneys.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
