And now, let’s continue with tips for reducing your trash.
Buy concentrated products that need to be diluted before use, such as cleaners, laundry detergents, frozen juice, fruit drinks and more. This will save on packaging, since you will be bringing less into your home.
Reduce the amount of catalogues and junk mail that comes in to your home. Sign up to remove your name from direct marketing firms and opt out of all of those newsletters, promotional materials and catalogues. You can learn more about reducing your catalogue clutter by clicking here.
Buy products in containers that can be recycled. Learn what products can be recycled in your area. Cardboard, paper and plastics with the numbers 1 or 2 on the bottom are pretty safe bets. Usually, plastic milk gallons qualify. Some recycling centers will also recycle other types of plastic, such as 5 or 6, which can usually be found on yogurt containers.
Find ways to reuse the packaging and products that come in to your home. With a little creativity, you can use what you have instead of buying more. You can start small, such as using an old sock as a dishrag or an old t-shirt for dusting. The Frugal Blog has a great section on reuse. There 90 different articles on the subject. You can check those out by clicking here: The Frugal Blog reuse category.
Cancel your magazine subscriptions and check out the magazines at the library. Most libraries will let you take home any non current (not that month) magazines for up to three weeks. And you can go and read current magazines right there in the library. Think of it as a way to get out of the house and have some time for yourself.
