Reflecting on the Past Year

I follow a semi-traditional school schedule. I may not take off the same days as the public and private schools but I usually take summers off. Summers are not void of learning but there are no tests, workbooks, or set schedules. So, in essence, the year is coming to a close. As a year ends I tend to think about all the accomplishments or lack of accomplishments we had during school. It helps me cherish the memories as well as learn to do better or learn what works. I tend to think that homeschooling goes in cycles. You have solid years and iffy years. This year was iffy due to a lack of organization and feeling overwhelmed with preparing one daughter for high school and another to deal with a learning disability.

So what can I say about the past homeschool year?

It was the last year I am homeschooling my oldest daughter. She will be attending high school next year.

It was the last year my son will attend a virtual school. He asked to be homeschooled again.

It was the last year my 7 year old struggles with a curriculum that does not address her reading issues. We discovered she is dyslexic and thus a new year will begin on a different path.

It was the last year my little one will play school as she has her very own curriculum for next year. She is super excited.

It was the year I found out that my ability to work, homeschool, and manage a house, needs more organization and practice. I learned to cut down on things that do not benefit my family.

I pray it is the last year I am so behind on laundry but that is hardly a school issue.

It was a year that I learned what works for each of my children so I can start out the next year better then before. Then again, that is what every year teaches and how we strive to being the next. Be encouraged…homeschooling teaches the mom as much as the children.
