Relief Society: Being Strong in Faith

In last October’s General Conference, Sister Julie B Beck gave a talk about being strong and immovable in three areas. The first area that she focused on was faith. Recently I attended a Relief Society lesson, which reviewed the principles in this talk, and it reminded me to go back and think about them. This talk really touched me as I listened to it, and I can see ways that I can still work to apply its teachings to my life.

The first principle that Sister Beck speaks about is faith. She lists specific things that we can do as sisters to be strong in our faith. These things include regular temple and church attendance, studying the gospel, prayer and having family home evening with your family. It is interesting to me that she puts faith first.

It is important that we each put renewing and strengthening our faith first when it comes to prioritizing our time. Our faith gives us strength to handle the problems that come our way. It can give us hope. If we are renewing ourselves by strengthening our faith we will have greater strength to give to our children and our husbands.

It is easy to excuse ourselves from reading the scriptures or from having meaningful personal prayer, but that is a dangerous practice. These things are vital if you mean to keep your faith strong. If you feel overwhelmed, these habits are usually some of the first to go, and then life begins to seem even more overwhelming. Begin simply, just set aside time each day to read your scriptures for a few minutes. Take time to kneel and pray sincerely about your day and your struggles. You will be surprised at the strength that you feel as you do these things.

I know that as I put building my faith first that everything else just falls into place. The Lord blesses us as we strive to do the right things. We can accomplish more if we put him first in our lives. Building our faith will only help us to succeed.
