Relief Society: Pressure to Be Perfect

One of the biggest problems that women in the church face is the drive to be perfect. This is a difficult feeling to combat. The church leaders encourage to continually strive to be better, but at the same time they do not mean for us to beat ourselves up constantly. We should focus on one or two areas at a time. Additional pressure to be perfect may come when we compare ourselves to others. This pressure to be perfect can cause some people to dread attending church. This pressure is usually inflicted by yourself, and you should not let it stop you from attending church.

One thing I have learned, as I have grown older is that everyone has personal trials and struggles. We rarely know what they are. Everyone has personal heartache, and we can rarely fathom how deeply it affects him or her. We can look to the sisters around us to get ideas on how to approach problems that we are facing, but we should never feel less because of them.

Additionally you should acknowledge the progress that you have made. You may not reach your goals as quickly as you would like, but even if you get half way there you have made significant improvements and changes in your life. This can help you to find peace as you continue to working. Remember that we need to only work to improve a little bit at a time; we aren’t going to completely change everything over night.

Ultimately we need to find a way to feel the love that Heavenly Father has for each of us. As we feel that love we are strengthened, we feel acceptance and hope. That hope can encourage us to strive to be better, but in a way that isn’t belittling or negative. As you accept the Lord in your life fully, this peace can help you as well.
