Relief Society: Serving as a Group

The Relief Society was organized so that the women of the church could help give service. It is important to realize that one of the primary purposes of the Relief Society is to help others. At times you may be the one who needs the help. At other times you may be asked to contribute in some way. It is important to remember that everything comes in cycles. Whenever possible it is important to reach out and offer service as you can.

In addition to the traditional service projects in which sisters provide service hours in the community or assemble kits, you can quietly serve the sisters around you. As you make it a habit to quietly offer help to others, you may be surprised at how much you can do with very little effort. Sometimes all that is needed is a quick phone call or a little note to help others.

At other times you may need to step in with more active service. Remember that the service you give in Relief Society should not be affecting your family negatively. It can be a difficult balancing act, but your first priority should be your family. For example you may volunteer one weekend to help on a bigger project, it really shouldn’t get in the way of your family life. But if you were to do this every weekend, then it could become detrimental to your family.

Remember that one of the greatest things that we can do to serve others is to learn to love them. As we do this it becomes much easier to step in and help where we need to. It is easier to reach out and lift others when we truly love them. It helps us to refrain from judging others as well. As a Relief Society we can work together to strengthen people all over the world. As we each do our small part great things will be accomplished.
