The Relief Society broadcast on Saturday was a simply wonderful meeting. One of the key points that I got out of the entire meeting was the importance of family. It was refreshing to hear so much emphasis put on the family again. The responsibility that we have towards our children is enormous. If we do not take the time to teach them the gospel, then no one else will. Sadly, the world is becoming more and more focused on things that detract from happiness and the family.
As women it is easy to feel as though you are not accomplishing anything. Young children may have a difficult time sitting still. At times it may seem that all you can handle is running from one mess to another. It can be so hard to take the time to sit down with your children when they are small to read them the words from the scriptures each day. Even just doing simple flannel board stories will help them to learn the scriptures stories. Once they know the stories the scriptures are not as intimidating to read.
When your children are older and in school, it may become even more difficult to find time to focus on the gospel as a family. If you are overextended through extracurricular activities and your own job, you may need to find areas to cut back. You can not sacrifice teaching the gospel to your children. Everything else can be postponed or rearranged, but you will not get these moments back. You need every moment you can. If it is too difficult to fit scripture study in at night, cut something else out.
Another focus of the night was on service. It is important to take the time to serve others. You can teach your children about the true love of Christ through the acts of service that you give to others. If you involve your children in the service then you are truly multitasking.
If you missed the broadcast you can listen to the talks at the church’s website. The text of the talks will be available on Thursday. I especially found the insights of Sister Barbara Thompson insightful on raising children helpful. I hope you will take the time to review the entire broadcast.
