Relief Society: “What Latter-Day Saint Women Do Best: Stand Strong and Immovable”

In her talk “What Latter Saint Women Do Best: Stand Strong and Immovable” Sister Julie B Beck spoke to the sisters during the Relief Society General Broadcast. She speaks first of the love that she has for all the sisters. She then refers to a quote by President Hinckley, which reads:

“I am convinced there is no other organization anywhere to match the Relief Society of this Church. It has a membership of more than five million women across the earth. If they will be united and speak with one voice, their strength will be incalculable. . . . It is so tremendously important that the women of the Church stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord.”

Sister Beck explains that she long pondered the way that we, as sisters, need to be strong and immovable. She names three specific areas that we need to focus on. The first area is faith. She speaks about the importance of building our faith and gives specific suggestions on things that we should be doing. Three of the things she focuses on are temple attendance, scripture study and prayer.

The next area that we should focus on is family. She emphasizes the importance that we each understand the divine roles of womanhood. It is also important to have children and to raise them righteously in the gospel. Sister Beck mentions that we should defend the institution of family as well.

The final area that Sister Beck focuses on is relief. This focus is mainly on service to others. She points out that we need to continue to help others, as the world’s events become more and more trying. Sister Beck concludes her talk with a section specifically for the leaders of the local Relief Societies. She encourages the leaders to focus on helping the sisters and studying the gospel together.

This was a wonderful talk. As I listened and reread it, it brought peace into my heart. I am grateful for the guidance that Sister Beck offers. I know that we should each be striving to strengthen our testimonies, our families and increase our service to others. I hope that you will take the time to prayerfully read this talk.
