Would you renew your marriage vows? At one stage, it became quite a trend for people to renew their vows. Would you? Why or why not?
One reason why you might choose to renew your marriage vows is to publicly affirm your love for each other. In this day and age where many marriages are going to the wall, it’s great for others to see a marriage that has stood the test of time, that is still going strong and where the couple still loves each other and puts the other one at the center of their world.
You might decide to renew your marriage vows as a way to show to your spouse as well others how important your spouse still is to you and that if you had it all to do again, you would. People I know who have renewed their vows, have found it a meaningful experience as it brings back memories of the special wedding day
If you had not been believers when you married and have come to faith since, it might be a meaningful thing to do and a good opportunity to invite others along those in your joy and perhaps explain why you are doing it.
One reason you might choose not to renew your marriage vows is because the vows you made when you were married were for life. They are not like a drivers’ license that has to be renewed every year or it will expire and go out of date. Despite what current statistics try to tell us, marriage is intended to be a lifetime commitment. Since it’s not something that needs to be done again, in a sense renewing the marriage vows would be pointless. It’s not something that needs to be updated and yet… in a way our marriages do need to be updated, and kept fresh and vibrant. We do need to tell and show our spouse how important they are in our lives. And that we are still committed to them every day.
So renewing your vows, is it a good thing to do? Would you? Why or why not? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
