Resolving to Make the Best of Marriage in ‘08

Happy New Year’s Eve!

Last year when I was first hired on by Families.com I was only blogging over in Pets. At the end of December I set some New Year’s Resolutions to accomplish in 2007 in regards to the Pets Blog, which I recently took stock of.

I thought it’d be a good idea to do the same here. (At least as far as making resolutions, that is. I didn’t make any last year in Marriage to take stock of now.)

Resolution #1: Accentuating the Positive

I’m a firm believer that a positive attitude is essential for a good marriage. When I run across unique, positive ways people have dealt with problems common to marriages, I’m going to make sure to emphasize them. And examine them so we can learn why such and such an approach was successful.

Be warned, I’m a real-life Pollyanna and we’re going to be playing a lot of the “Glad Game” this next year. Why? Because finding the good in a situation —any situation– is how we’ll learn to put things in a positive perspective so we can deal with everything in a positive light.

Resolution #2: Tools of the Trade

Marriages take work, right? Well, just as a carpenter wouldn’t go to work without hammer and nails, a surgeon wouldn’t consider surgery without a well-stocked operating room, or an accountant wouldn’t tackle taxes without a calculator and spreadsheet program, neither can we expect to have successful marriages without the right tools helping us.

What kind of tools do we need? For starters, I think respect, patience, commitment, and compassion are must-haves. But I’ll also admit I don’t know the names of all the tools we’ll need. I’m going to be learning as I go and sharing with you what types of tools we might want to carry in our marriage tool belts for use in building happier futures.

Question to Readers

What kind of topics would you like to see covered in the Marriage Blog next year? More wedding articles? Date night ideas? Romance suggestions? Approaches to conflict resolution? Exercises for strengthening marriages? Other?

Either leave a comment below or visit the “What Would You Like to See From Marriage in ’08” thread in the forum to cast a vote.
