Resources for Irish Genealogy

Ireland It is getting very close to St. Patrick’s Day. Do you have Irish heritage? Now is a good time to do some genealogy research, and find out the answer to that question. There are plenty of online resources that can help you to do it.

Last year at around this time, Ancestry.com released “The Irish Collection”. It has been called the “definitive” Irish collection. It contains records related to Ireland from the nineteenth century.

“The Irish Collection” includes a bunch of different groupings of records. The “Griffiths Valuation 1848 – 1864” has 2.5 million records related to land an property rental in Ireland during that time frame. “Tithe Applotment Books 1823 – 1837” is a collection that shows who paid a tax to the Church of Ireland on the amount of acreage of land that they owned. You can also find a few collections of photos, and one collection of maps.

FamilySearch also has four collections of Irish records. “Ireland, Marriages, 1619 – 1898”, was recently updated on March 10, 2012. This collection holds 430,834 records. Other Irish collections include: “Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845 – 1958”, “Ireland Deaths, 1864 – 1870”, and “Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620 – 1881”.

FamilySearch also has Irish genealogy resources available in their Learning Center. These are videos and slide shows that you can watch in order to learn more about different aspects of genealogy research that relates to Ireland.

“Getting Started in Irish Genealogy Part 1” shows you how to work backwards, from yourself, to trace your immigrant ancestors in Ireland. “Ireland Beginning Research Series Immigration Part 1: Strategies” helps you to identify your ancestors by using certain strategies. These are just a few of the Irish resources you can access from the FamilySearch Learning Center.

Want to learn more about Irish history, in general? FamilyTree.com has some very informative articles for you to read. “Irish Genealogy” goes over a brief history of the country of Ireland. It talks about the religion, language, food, and culture of the people who are Irish. You should also read the article on “Celtic Genealogy” which covers the older history of Ireland.

Irish Genealogy is a website based in Ireland. You can go here to view nearly 3 million pre-1900 church records, free of charge. In January of 2012, the search facility in this website was updated.
