Yes, I’m having eighties flashbacks these days. Bear with me. If you’re seeking an eighties flashback yourself, preferably with your preschooler, read on.
I enjoy reliving my childhood with my daughter. Although the hair was large and the hairspray was available in unimaginable quantities, there are a few things about the eighties that bear repeating. For those of us who are – ahem – getting on and were children of the eighties, here are a few ways to relive the good times.
Beaded bracelets and pins: Do you remember those little beaded pins that you put on your shoes and gave to friends to show affection? Of course! Get some seed beads and some pins and do the same thing with your preschooler. They make great sneaker decorations.
Punk hair colors: I’m sure I’ll get in trouble for this one, but don’t tell your mother. We recently used Wilton Cake Dye on a few strands of my daughter’s white-blonde hair. You can also use Kool Aid or Jello for a temporary punk look if your child has light brown hair.
Slinkies: Who would be without one of these? Luckily, they are still around. Hopefully you now have a home with a long set of stairs to slink down too.
Paint with water books: We recently rediscovered these. They’re wonderful for sick days. Just give your child a cup of water and a paintbrush and they’ll be quiet and relatively motionless for at least ten minutes.
Hungry, Hungry Hippos: This game is still around, and it’s great for hand-eye coordination. Open the hippos’ mouths and try to capture the marbles.
Chia pets: I’ve made versions of these as crafts at the nature center where I work, and the kids love them. Find some instructions here and get growing!
Roller skates: I’m a big fan of roller skates for small children. They’re easier than roller blades, but they have the same hurtling-down-the-hill thrills. Just remember the helmet.
