In a previous blog I told you about how shag carpeting was making a comeback. Personally, I have never been a fan of the furry carpeting, so it’s a trend I wouldn’t consider incorporating into my home’s décor. However, there is another trend in flooring that interests me very much—-area rugs. Research shows that area rugs are growing in popularity and are becoming more than just room “accessories.”
An increasing amount of homeowners are using area rugs to divide a room or define a space within a larger room. For example, if you live in a studio apartment, an area rug can serve as the foundation for the living room. This design trick can work on carpeted areas, but is especially effective in apartments with hardwood floors.
Another reason area rugs are increasing in popularity is because they are an easy way to make a statement. Stroll through home design stores and you will see hundreds of different styles to choose from. What’s more, advances in technology have made it possible to create computerized looms that form extremely intricate patterns.
But, perhaps, the best part about decorating with area rugs is the fact that they are so easy to move. My mom has a beautiful area rug that she displays in the living room during the summer months and the den during the winter. She’s all of 5-feet tall and easily rolls the entire rug and transports it from room to room with ease.
Naturally, the price of area rugs is also a factor in its popularity. Research shows rugs are becoming more affordable, which is why many homeowners are purchasing them soon after they install hard-surface flooring. One study by the Home Depot reports that in recent years there has been a spike in the number of rug sales by homeowners with hardwood floors. According to the study, consumers are typically in the market for a rug because “natural materials such as tile or hardwood flooring tend to be cold and can carry noise.”
If you aren’t fond of the look of a large Oriental rug then you may consider purchasing carpet squares, which are a modern way to make a smaller statement.
