Return to Pooh Corner – Kenny Loggins – CD Review

Return to Pooh Corner from Kenny Loggins was our lullaby CD of choice for several years when our twins were small. It’s a lovely and relaxing CD of lullabies accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano, penny whistles, harmonica and Celtic harp . Some of the songs are traditional. Other songs are borrowed from other contemporary musicians like John Lennon, Paul Williams, Paul Simon, Jimmy Webb, Rickie Lee Jones and more. All the songs capture the magic of childhood.

We had a rough first year with our twins. This CD saw us through hospitalizations, surgeries, and average rough days with two infants. Even now, listening as I write this review, I find myself feeling very relaxed and comforted.

The CD begins with the traditional song, “All The Pretty Little Ponies”, with a few additional lyrics from Loggins and David Pack. The harmony with Loggins, David Crosby and Graham Nash is marvelous.

Next is the Neverland Medley with “Pure Imagination” featuring a brief clip from Gene Wilder who tells the listener to “Hold Your Breath/ Make a Wish/ Count to Three” as an invitation and entrance to Never Never Land. Other songs in the medley are “Somewhere Out There”, and Never Never Land”.

One of my favorites is “Return to Pooh Corner”. Loggins originally wrote “House on Pooh Corner” during his senior year of high school. In this return to the song, Kenny finds his way back to the wood and his old bear friend.

I’ve always loved “The Rainbow Connection” ever since Kermit sang it in the Muppet Movie. This version is also very nice.

“St. Judy’s Comet” was written by Paul Simon. It’s about a dad singing to a little boy who is resisting sleep. “The Last Unicorn” invokes images of moonlight, a path of clouds, and a shimmering unicorn.

“Cody’s Song” was written by Loggins for his son Cody. It’s a beautiful song from father to child reassuring the child that their parent will always be there for them.

“Love” is a song written by John Lennon. The lyrics are uncomplicated, “Love is real/ Real is love”. It is followed by “The Horses”, a dream of a song where the listener is invited to fly in the night sky.

The CD ends with the traditional Irish Lullaby “To-Ra-Loo-Ra”. The Celtic harps on this song are truly beautiful.

I’d recommend “Return to Pooh Corner” to anyone with small children. We have given it to lots of new parents and to several mothers on bed rest. You can listen to clips here at Amazon.
