Reuse Egg Cartons and Save

This morning I was making a large batch of egg muffin sandwiches. My husband asked for more things to take to work for breakfast and English muffins were on sale this week.

Of course, I wound up with a couple of empty egg cartons when I was done, which got me thinking about how they can be reused to save money and the environment. All of these ideas will do both, save yourself or someone else money and prevent the egg cartons from winding up in the trash. Of course, they can be recycled, too, but wouldn’t it be nice if they could get a few extra uses out of them first?

Donate

You can donate extra egg cartons to local farmers at your favorite farm market stand. Farmers who sell fresh eggs would be happy to have extra egg cartons that will allow them to transport and sell the eggs safely. Be sure to cross out the expiration dates marked on the cartons, first.

Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms can usually use egg cartons for their different activities. Home schoolers can use them, too. Egg cartons can be used for counting and sorting objects as well as for our next use on the list…

Crafts

Egg cartons can be made into spiders or caterpillars very easily. You can also just challenge kids to make “something” with them, and you might be surprised with what they come up with, everything from monsters to robots to animals.

One of my children once cut them into strips, colored the strips with markers and made a mosaic picture.
The egg cartons can serve another use with crafts, to store all of those little beads and jewels and miscellaneous craft supplies.

Organization

All of those little cups for eggs can also hold all sorts of things. Plus you can close the lid on them as well. Forget fancy organizers. Egg cartons are free! Use one to collect buttons and store thread for mending, another to hold jewelry, another to collect the miscellaneous change that collects on the dresser, etc. Anything small that needs a home can be temporarily stored in an egg carton. Plus, egg cartons are perfect for storing most Christmas ornaments.
