Reuse from A to Z! (Mu-N)

The wind is howling outside today in anticipation of a big storm that will come later this afternoon. It gives us all a sense of anticipation and a desire to be prepared. Batting down the hatches puts me in mind of our resources and our efforts to reuse everything we have. We are getting better, but we still seem to have a large amount of materials that go out on the curb for recycling. Hopefully, we can cut that amount down, in our efforts to reuse items first.

We are still getting through our alphabet of recycling. Here are some ideas.

M

Mugs: When we had our chimney swept out in the fall, the owners son presented us with a lovely little aloe vera plant in a Christmas mug. I thought that was just wonderful. Mugs can be used for all sorts of storage ideas in the home office, too. You can use them to store change, pencils and pens, candy, etc. You can also use a mug as a vase for small flowers such as violets or to create gifts such as when you include a packet of hot chocolate, marshmallows and a candy cane to stir it.

N

Newpaper: Both Nicole and I have talked a lot about reusing newspaper. There are just so many ways you can reuse this resource. There are the traditional ways, such as using newspaper for packing material, there is the unusual, such as lining your camping tent with it for insulation, and there is everything in between. Use the comics to wrap gifts, make your own fire logs by rolling the newspaper, use it to wash your windows and keep weeds under control in your garden and use a thick layer of paper to act as a hot pad to protect your furniture or counters.

Stick with us as we continue making our way through the reuse alphabet.
