Reuse: New Uses for Old Plastic Bottles

Every time I used to empty out the trash, I was annoyed at all the large plastic bottles that were in there taking up space. Several years ago, we had a recycling program, but now we don’t. So I decided to figure out what to do with all these leftover plastic bottles from anything and everything.

First, what types of bottles am I talking about?

  • Milk
  • Soda
  • Detergent, Bleach and Fabric Softener
  • Juice

They were the main bottles I always seemed to have lots of. However, since I’ve been saving them, I have realized how many other things come in plastic bottles and can be reused. I’m sure you will do the same.

Here are just a small sampling of the dozens upon dozens of things you can use plastic bottles from bleach or milk. First, if you decide to use the bottle for something edible, I recommend using the milk jug for that. The bleach jug, once cleaned thoroughly is good for other items.

  • Store sugar or flour in plastic milk containers
  • Cut a handled bottle in half, and turn the bottle into a scoop for bird seed, dog food, or even a pooper scooper.
  • Cut holes into the sides of plastic bottles and use them for storing all types of items. With the handle, moving things is easy.
  • Cut a hole into the side of a bottle, fill with bird seed and hang from a tree, and you’ll have an instant bird feeder.
  • If you have a soap bottle that has a squirt top, you can use it for basting foods on the BBQ, use it to squirt pancake batter onto a griddle in really fun shapes, or to hold or store shampoo or conditioner, bath soap or other bath related liquids.
  • The top of a soda bottle makes a great funnel when cut off.
  • You can use the bottoms to sort items, store things or even as a unique serving bowl.
  • My neighbor did something really weird with a soda bottle. She poked a bunch of smallish holes all over the place in the bottle. Then she duct taped her garden hose to the bottle and let the kids play in her home-made sprinkler. As strange as it looked, the kids had a blast!
