Reversible Fabric Shade

Try something new instead of typical curtains and blinds. Create your own unique window treatment. This is the perfect look for kid’s rooms, and your kids will have fun choosing fabrics and helping you make this reversible fabric window shade.

You will need two pieces of different, interesting fabric that is about 6″ longer and 4″ wider than the window you are treating. Lay one piece of fabric on top of the other with the “good” sides facing in. Sew the edges or adhere with hem tape, closing both sides and the end that will become the top.

On the bottom edge, sew or press the edge closed on both sides, up to about 2″ from each corner. Leave the middle section open. Turn the fabric right side out and finish closing the bottom seam. Add trim, beading, or lace if desired.

Attach a small loop of ribbon to each side of the shade about half way down. Next, cut 7 strips of ribbon (for an average window, more for a wider window). Make them about 18″ long. Fold in half and sew the fold onto the shade, evenly spacing five ribbons across the top and adding one to each corner at the bottom. Tie the bottom ribbons into bows. The top ribbons will be used to hang the shade. Screw five heavy mug hooks into the wall above the window or directly into the top of the window frame. Tie one ribbon to each hook.

When the shade is closed, you will only see one fabric. To open the shade, tie the bottom ribbons to the loops on the side, which will also display the other fabric. And, if you get tired or looking at one side, you can simply turn the shade around for another look.

For a boy’s room, you can replace the ribbon with rope, twine, rawhide, or strips of fabric.
