Road Trip Food

Planning a road trip? Whether you are going for a few hours, a day or even longer, you can save money when you plan ahead.

On Friday, my husband and I took the day off. Our kids were out of school, so we planned a road trip. While the destination wasn’t that far, we knew that we would be gone the whole day. Rather than relying on pricey restaurant food, we planned ahead so we could feed our kids while staying within the budget.

There are plenty of things that you can pack for road trip food as long as you have a cooler. Regular sandwiches and roll up sandwiches (made with a flour tortilla) are both good choices. remember to put a barrier, such as mayonnaise, between the bread and any wet ingredients, such as tomato, to keep the sandwich from getting soggy.

Other choices for lunch or snacks include easy to eat and store food. Carrot sticks, celery sticks, sliced apples (dip them in lemon juice so they won’t brown), granola bars, trail mix, pretzels, even fresh green beans can make great road trip food.

But what if you want something hot? That is pretty simple. Get an adapter that is available in most hardware stores. It will allow you to use your crockpot in the car. Load it up and have it cook your meal along the way. Use a crockpot liner for easy clean up and pack the crockpot safely to avoid risk of spills and burns.

Many people also practice manifold cooking. Look it up on the Internet. There are recipes and techniques that will allow you to use the heat of your engine to cook a meal.

If that all seems too much for you, then make sure to plan out your restaurant eating in advance. Compare prices and specials and gather coupons. This way you know exactly how much you’ll be spending on your road trip food.
