Condensation rolled down the pewter pitcher of cream. Our waiter used phrases
like, “Pardon me”, “Allow me to slip away” and said, “Would the lady care for more
wine?” Our warm breadbasket overflowed with four types of rolls and breadsticks. It’s
been three years and I still remember our visit to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT.
It was blissful and indulgent despite the fact that we brought Riley, our 11-month-old
son. (At dinner Riley was two floors above us with the hotel babysitter. More on that in
a minute.)
Described as “A Mountain Resort in The European Tradition by the family that
inspired “Sound of Music.” Originally the von Trapp family moved to Stowe in 1939
after purchasing an old farmhouse on 600 acres. For years the family worked, “cooking,
gardening and maple sugaring to beekeeping and cross-country skiing, each found a
fulfilling life on the farm.
For over sixty years the von Trapp family has traveled and sung, beloved for
their voices, strong resolve and incredible journey from Austria to the United States.
Now you can enjoy visiting a place rich with history and family bonds. In 2005, Travel
and Leisure Family Magazine named the Trapp Family Lodge one of the “50 Best Kid
Friendly Resorts.”
The Trapp Family Lodge has a wonderful reputation so I heard about it for years
before we visited. We booked their most basic room, a Deluxe. I asked the reservationist
how I could save money and she was quite helpful. We decided to forgo the romance
package that came with a two night stay over, a five course meal, two full country
breakfasts, a bottle of champagne, a gift basket and two massages. Ala Carte (purchasing
those items separately) was less expensive, saving us over $150.00.
Room 245 offered a king size bed, armoire with tv, couch, coffee table, closet,
bathroom and two glass doors onto a roof-patio that gave us a stunning panoramic view
of the mountain peaks. White and red geranium plants hung from planters and carved
wood decorated the railings.
