Thinking about a room of your own which is very Virginia Woolf, a room should reflect two things. One is the function or purpose for which it is to be used. The other is your personality, especially if it is a study of office that you spend a lot of time in.
So I thought I’d tell you about my study. The walls are Dresden blue. They were that color when we bought the house. Even if they hadn’t been, they would have been painted blue anyway as my last study was since blue is my favorite color. Curtains are also blue with a white lace in the middle for letting the sunlight in. An awning on the outside keeps the sunlight off on hot summer days.
It has light grey carpet and the rest of the room is taken up with a large corner desk and two bookcases covered with books, some my own published children’s books as well as myriad poetry, writing books, and books on various topics like myths, families, shadow, religions, etc that might come in handy one day. There are also several bible translations and bible commentaries. There’s not a lot of fiction on these bookcases. They’re mostly in the lounge or family room bookcases. There is a pile of books in a box waiting to be reviewed.
A permanent flip over calendar about friends, given me by a dear friend years ago, sits on my desk, which is covered with notes, book and various tools needed for writing. A jar of pens sits on the windowsill and another on the desk. Many of them are purple. Thought I love blue, I love to write with purple pens. Sometimes I use pink too.
Other colors in my study come from Sydney Swans red and white football posters and especially those showing the 2005 team holding the premiership cup.
One bookcase is filled with folders of ideas for stories, articles and poems, along with, information, drafts of novels, journals from my quiet time that contain bible readings and prayers over many years. As you can tell my room of my own reflects my interests and personality as well as being practical.
