Our Relief Society and Priesthood lesson this last week was found in the Joseph Smith manual, lesson three, and was entitled: “Jesus Christ, The Divine Redeemer of the World.” Just the title of the lesson brings me warmth and comfort as I know we’re going to learn something special from this inspired message.
The prologue to this lesson points out that as the Prophet of the Restoration, one of Joseph’s primary responsibilities was to testify of Jesus Christ. In a world that had so much light and truth taken from it, his job was to enlighten the minds of the people as to the true nature of God and the Godhead, and this role is one that the Prophet took seriously.
We begin by learning that salvation comes to the world through Jesus Christ. He was the ultimate sacrifice given unto us. When Cain and Abel both offered their sacrifices to the Lord, and Cain’s was not accepted, it was rejected because he did not offer it in similitude of the sacrifice of the Son of God.
Jesus Christ came to this earth and died for us, and because of this, all men can rise again. If we die in Jesus Christ, we shall have a fullness of joy upon death, and we have no reason to fear death whatsoever. We shall see and be reunited with our dead again. The Prophet made this a promise, stating that he had seen it all in vision. Not only shall we be raised up again, but if faithful, we shall become joint heirs with Christ in His kingdom.
Jesus Christ was a perfect and holy man, and watches over us today. Knowing how pure He is, and knowing that His eyes are upon us, shouldn’t we try to make our actions more consistent with our knowledge of right and wrong?
He provided the way by which we, through our obedience and faithfulness, can return to Him, and this because of His great and abiding love for us. He truly is our Savior, our Redeemer, and our King.
