If you have been running for some time and are contemplating taking it a step further prepare your body first. Running in a first-time marathon is major. It is major exciting and major challenging. Like most beginning marathon runners you probably like both of those ideas, excitement and challenge. It is a thrill to be out there for the first time with a bunch of other runners. You are hoping to win, of course, but that is not the most important thing in mind. We all want to win, but even more you want to prove it to yourself that you can do it, most likely.
You will want to start planning this big day well in advance. Not only do you have to prepare your mind, but also you have to prepare your body. They are both important aspects in this type of event.
Positive thinking is always great and the best attitude to have. Give yourself a pep talk. Keep telling yourself that you can do it…and you will. Give yourself a little break though and concentrate on being the best that you can be. Do not necessarily focus too much on winning, but rather focus on finishing the race.
Start preparing your body by running several weeks ahead of the marathon with slow, but steady increases in your distance. Increasing by one mile or even a half of a mile each week is a great way to train yourself to become accustomed to the distance. You will build up strength, speed, endurance and confidence. Drinking water at intervals throughout your training runs will keep your body hydrated. Marathon running will also include frequent stops for water. Eat healthy foods, such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains for greater endurance and to avoid becoming tired too quickly. Pace yourself to keep your oxygen level from decreasing.
Above all, give yourself some credit for having the confidence to participate in this challenge and remember….have fun!
