When I first heard the news that actress Salma Hayek was pregnant and engaged to her businessman boyfriend I was shocked. (Maybe it was because I always thought she and longtime former boyfriend, actor Edward Norton would one day reconcile.) However, I wasn’t surprised that Hayek was reluctant to confirm the news when the story first broke. Rather, she was photographed wearing oversized outfits in what some critics speculated was an effort to hide the pregnancy.
Now, the truth about her impending new offspring is finally being revealed. The actress recently sat down with a reporter from Marie Claire magazine and answered questions reagrding expecting her first child at age 40.
The responses that struck me were the ones where Hayek says women shouldn’t be in a hurry to have kids before they’re ready.
“Motherhood is not for everyone,” Hayek tells the magazine. “It is for me, but there’s no reason women should feel rushed to have a child.”
What’s more, Hayek uses the interview to take swipes at society’s view that if a woman doesn’t reproduce she has failed—even if she is a CEO of a company.
“You’ve got to be beautiful, smart, skinny, tall, rich, successful at your job, married to the right guy – and have genius children. And by the way, you also have to be a nun,” the actress laments to the magazine.
Interestingly, it wasn’t until after Hayek was named executive producer of one of the year’s biggest hits, ABC’s “Ugly Betty” that she got pregnant, though she won’t reveal when she plans to tie the knot (nor does she disclose her due date).
As for what she and her fiancé plan to name their little one… well, Hayek is not exactly forthcoming, but she does say what names she won’t be considering, including Tressel.
Apparently, birth records show that the name is growing in popularity, especially in Ohio. For all of you non-Big 10 sports fans—-an Ohio State University fan recently made headlines after he named his newborn son after a pair of Buckeye coaches — current coach Jim Tressel and the legendary Woody Hayes.
Tressel Hayes Huffines is the name Brent Huffines gave his newborn. The elder Huffines says the name “sounds as sweet as an OSU victory over Michigan.”
I can see why the Mexican born Hayek may not have been won over by the name.
