Yesterday, I talked about the importance of evaluating your performance and the performance of your home – based business at least once a year. Since I have not evaluated my two home – based businesses yet this year, now is a good time for me to do so. Today I am evaluating my freelance writing business. It is the business that I spend the most time working at, and the business that is my primary source of income.
Just so you know exactly what is being evaluated, my freelance writing business is a sole proprietorship. I work part time, between ten and twenty hours each week, after my boys go to bed for the night. During the day I am a full time stay at home mom. My business consists mostly of blogging, and I have a couple of other long term clients with projects that are related to e – commerce websites. The projects consist of editing product titles and writing product descriptions.
As part of my evaluation, I wanted to think about the most positive things that my business and I have done this year. One major accomplishment was that I celebrated my two year anniversary as a blogger here on Families.com. Another is that I have had enough work from blogging and my two other regular clients that I did not have to bid on any other projects this year.
Of course, an honest and effective evaluation must include an assessment of areas where the business needs improvement. I feel like I could learn to manage my time better during the day so that more housework gets done. That way, it would not be competing with my work time in the evening and I could get more work done. I also feel like I should be able to do more work in the time that I devote to working. Perhaps I can learn to write more quickly and efficiently. The third thing that I could improve upon is my tendency to procrastinate. Perhaps more attention to scheduling and advance planning can help there.
In the coming year, I would like to keep my freelance writing business running as smoothly as it is right now. I love the work that I do and the clients that I have. If I am able to free up more time for work by focusing on my goals for improvement, I may be able to earn more by taking on more work. Overall, I think that my writing business is doing well and I am glad that I took the time to sit down and think about it.
