The other day, I was listening to a particularly sappy love song, sung by a man, and the thought popped into my head—are these lyrics representative of what a man really thinks about his woman? Or are these songs targeted to the female audience and therefore, only give the women what they want to hear?
I asked my husband this question, and he shared some interesting insights with me. “The mushy songs, no,” he said. “But the songs that talk about faithfulness and feelings that endure, yes. Those are the songs that resonate with me and the way I feel about you.”
Because I enjoy torturing my husband … er, enjoy including him in my pursuits … I played him a few of the most famous romantic songs I could think of and asked his opinion.
First song: “When a Man Loves a Woman” as sung by Michael Bolton
Husband’s Opinion: “This song exemplifies the love that a man has for his woman. He’ll give up everything that he has for his wife. So I think (the singer) shows, with very focused emotions, that kind of truth and light and love.”
Second Song: “Love a Woman” as sung by Bryan Adams
Husband’s Opinion: “I liked the concept of looking into her eyes and seeing your unborn children. I don’t like the artistry of the song, but the themes are true. It goes far beyond the physical to ‘this is your soul mate.’”
Third Song: “She’s Like the Wind” as sung by Patrick Swayze
Husband’s Opinion: “That’s a more connective song—that gives an idea of the divinity of a woman. Most women you’ll ever meet are probably out of your league. (The singer) is very aware that his world is being held together by shreds, but that she is an angel of light in his life. I think women go ga-ga over it because it touches on the truth that women are daughters of God, and any man who is really honest with himself has to ask, ‘Why does she put up with me?’ It’s a chance for him to change and improve if he’s going to do it.”
Fourth Song: “Unchained Melody” as sung by The Righteous Brothers
Husband’s Opinion: “It’s a classic – both men and women love it. It touches on the need to be loved and to be needed, to share with another soul. It’s a love song because it suggests that an intimate way, this is how a man loves his wife and his wife loves him.”
He went on to say, “These songs expressed themselves more fully than I generally feel, but sometimes there is that crying need of loneliness, and these songs do reflect that. You, as my wife, are part of my DNA. You’re through all of me, and while I might not express it like these songs, it’s very real.”
Awww … yes, there’s a big old Tristi puddle over here right now.
