Saturday Night Live News: A Baby and a Death

A Baby for Amy

It has been announced that SNL news anchor Amy Poehler will now be her own Baby Mama. She and hubby Will Arnett have announced they are becoming first time parents, with the baby due in late fall. Poehler, on SNL for the past eight seasons, and actor Arnett have been married since 2003.

This must make Poehler’s box office success with Baby Mama, a joint venture with former SNL news anchor Tina Fey, all the sweeter. The movie features Fey as a woman who hires Poehler to carry her child. The movie pulled in an impressive $18.3 million on its opening weekend, pushing it to the #1 position. It also gives Universal Studios its first box office winner of 2008.

Poehler’s animated Nickelodeon show “The Mighty B” also premiered recently. Poehler voices the character Bessie Higgenbottom, a 9-year-old heroine who has black-framed glasses and scraggly teeth. Poehler, the show’s co-creator, describes the loud character as a “funny and sweet girl-tornado.” Bessie’s nemesis is Portia, a blonde haired, blue-eyed princess, voiced by Grey DeLisle. However, Bessie doesn’t let Portia bother her much, as she is on a quest to earn all 4,584 Honeybee troop badges. I haven’t even see this show yet, but I can just see a lot of Poehler in the description of the character!

Cheri Oteri’s Father Murdered

Former SNL cast member Cheri Oteri’s father was murdered Saturday in Nashville, TN. Her father, Gaetano Thomas Oteri, age 69, was murdered by his roommate, songwriter Richard William Fagan, age 61. Fagan and Oteri were longtime musical associates. A Nashville station is reporting the murder took place in Fagan’s home.

Fagan was arrested late Saturday night for a DUI, then admitted to the police that a alcohol fueled fight had occurred between the two and that he had used a pocket knife to cut Oteri. Fagan had written two number one John Michael Montgomery songs – “Be My Baby Tonight” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident).”
