Luxury can sometimes come in little packages. For us, it may be in the form of toaster pastries or “pop-tarts.” Because of the expense of these things (not to mention the sometimes shady nutritional value), we seldom buy them. But toaster pastries, especially if you get the healthier versions, aren’t bad things for snacks or an emergency breakfast once in a while. Back to school seems to be a good time for toaster pastries, as we all adjust back to a hectic lifestyle.
Here are some ways that you can save money on toaster pastries.
My favorite way to save on toaster pastries is to make my own. It really isn’t very hard, and you can ensure a better nutritional content when you make it from scratch. It is much cheaper than buying them from the store.
First make a pie crust. You can cheat and buy a ready-made pie crust, although your cost will increase. Roll the crust out flat on a cookie sheet. Use a butter knife to score the crust into individual rectangles.
Next bake the crust until it is just almost done. Spread half of the rectangles with jelly, jam, preserves or a cinnamon and sugar filling. Top the spread rectangles with the other rectangles. At this point you can freeze the toaster pastries, continue to bake them for about three more minutes and then serve, or refrigerate them. Frozen and refrigerated toaster pastries can be popped into a toaster oven and toasted when needed.
Another way to save on toaster pastries is to watch for them in your grocery store’s clearance section or at a salvage store. The toaster pastry boxes, for some reason, tend to get crushed. Crushed boxes are usually discounted by 50 percent or more. For some reason, most consumers want a pristine box, even though it doesn’t affect the product.
Happy toasting!
