Taking advantage of the season’s bounty means that you will save money automatically. Here are some tips on how to find the bounty of the season.
Happy Memorial Day! This is a holiday that marks the beginning of the summer season here, even though the calendar says otherwise and the kids still have a few more weeks of school. Still, with temperatures in the 80s, everyone’s mind is on summer.
While we may look forward to summer and its fun activities, such as going swimming, how often do we live our lives the same way no matter what the season? We stay indoors with the air conditioning and the cable television or make the same casseroles for dinner that we did in the winter. Break out of the routine and take advantage of the following.
Summer produce
Prices for summer produce will be relatively low, so stock up on those berries and watermelon. You can make many fruits into cold soups as well as deserts. Or, start a garden and save even more money.
Community events
There are so many fun events, free summer concerts, community picnics, fireworks and more that are centered around the summer season. Check the newspaper and the Internet for local free activities. We just saw a Sousa band on Friday for free.
Water fun
Sure, you can pay to join the community center or gym for pool access in the summer, but perhaps there is a lake or ocean nearby that can be had for free. Even little creeks and streams can be fun for the kids to splash around in.
Once summer comes, so do the yard sales! Yard sale shopping can be fun because you never know what treasures you will find. Take advantage of the bounty of “new” stuff that you need for pennies instead of dollars. Who knows, we may see you on The Antique Roadshow!
