It is a fact that babies need stuff, lots of stuff. And all of that stuff winds up costing lots of money. Fortunately, with a few frugal practices, you can spend much less. Here are some ideas on how you can save on baby items.
Announce it to the world
If you are lucky, as soon as you announce that you are expecting, you will be inundated with offers for free baby stuff, such as equipment, clothes and toys. Friends, family and even casual acquaintances often have a ton of baby stuff that is sitting there waiting to be used. If this isn’t the case for you, then simply let it be known that you are willing to take any unwanted baby stuff. Of course, you want to be aware of safety issues, so pass on the cribs and the car seats.
Don’t overbuy
All of those cute baby things are such a temptation. You want the best for your little one, and let us face it, it is fun to shop for all of those nice things. But it is best to have a plan in mind so you don’t overbuy. Go easy on the newborn outfits, since your baby will outgrow them in a matter of weeks and sometimes days. Skip other unneeded items, such as a baby wipe warmer and even the changing table. A changing pad on top of a dresser works very well (make sure to secure it with the kit that is included).
Comparison shop
Pick up a copy of Baby Bargains, which lists the essentials you need and rates them based on price and safety. Once you know what you want, take the time to visit several stores and take advantage of coupons, coupon codes and sales.
Host a swap
If your baby is a little older, why not trade in those gently used clothes, toys and other items for others that he needs now? Host a baby swap party with friends. Everyone brings the stuff their baby has outgrown and exchanges it for what their babies need right now. Not only will you get the items you need for free, but you will bless your friends and clean out your closet at the same time.
