Whether your child is jetting back to college or boarding school this month, you’ll want to snag the best rate before it’s too late.
Fortunately, being a student can yield major travel savings. For as much as they are despised for their insane baggage fees and other crazy expenses, some commercial airlines also offer student discounts that can really help out in a pinch.
For example, since 1998, AirTran Airways has featured a discount airfare program for travelers 18 to 22 years old. The reduced rates let young people fly standby for $69 on short segment flights and $99 on longer flights. While there are a number of restrictions and blackout dates, according to company officials, more than one million young adults have taken advantage of the money-saving program since its inception. In addition, Lufthansa runs a very successful student service called GenerationFly. For more than a decade, college students with valid .edu email addresses are eligible for deep discounts to Germany and nearly every other destination the airline flies. GenerationFly members are also allowed one free date change.
If you are traveling abroad for educational purposes, consider visiting the websites of foreign based airlines including Alitalia, Korean Air and Qantas. The companies often advertise promo codes that allow students to save up to $50 on airfares to and from the United States.
Finally, American Airlines is another major commercial carrier that offers money-saving travel discounts to students, though its program operates differently than AirTran and Lufthansa. Instead of providing free discounts, American Airlines sells Student Advantage Cards for about $20 per year, which includes a 10 percent discount on all American Airline flights. The carrier also offers reduced rates on student vacation packages to coeds attending participating universities throughout the United States. American Airlines is big on social media platforms too, so don’t forget to check the carrier’s Facebook page and Twitter account for added travel savings.
