With bread prices going through the roof (I spotted a small loaf of oatmeal bread in the store here for a whopping price of $3.69!) you might not have the luxury of tossing those bread ends–you know the ones with all of the crust? Personally, they don’t bother me, especially when they are homemade (I’m making a loaf of oatmeal bread as I type. It will cost mere pennies). But, I do know many people who toss these ends because no one in their family will eat them.
If that is the case in your family, you might want to consider the following ideas for using those bread ends. You’ll have less waste, and you’ll save money, too. Here you go!
Why spend mucho $$$ on fancy frozen “Texas Toast?” You can make your own using the bread ends. Butter the ends thickly with butter. Next, sprinkle the bread with garlic powder and a pinch of oregano (just a very small pinch). Next, place them on a cookie sheet and toast them in a 350 degree oven for just a few minutes until they are browned. Voila! Do this in your toaster oven to save energy costs.
Throw the bread ends into the freezer. When you have enough of these ends, turn them into stuffing for chicken, turkey or pork dinners.
For a quick casserole topping, run the bread ends through a food processor. Add some parmesan cheese along with spices, such as minced onion or garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Pulse a few times. Then add the mixture to the top of your casserole before baking for a yummy meal.
Use an bread end to revive stale cookies or hard brown sugar. Place the bread in the same container as the cookies or sugar. The cookies or sugar will absorb the moisture of the bread and be as good as new again.
