Saving Money Assignments for Families

Saving money and living a frugal lifestyle should involve the whole family. When one person is in charge of reducing waste and finding new ways of stretching the budget, it can be overwhelming and frustrating. A family working together is more likely to accomplish their savings goals, I think.

Everyone in the family should take on some responsibility for saving money. Even the youngest members should be able to help out (as long as they can walk and take direction). Here is a guide to some of the ways that you can create money saving assignments for the whole family.

Basically, each family takes on a responsibility for saving money in one area, suited to the family member’s temperament and age. A three- or four-year-old may enjoy being in charge of making sure that lights are turned off and reporting when they aren’t. Mom may want to take on clipping coupons and reducing the grocery bill. Dad may enjoy researching the best prices on needed products. An older child could find new ways to reuse what you already have, organizing the stockpile, or making sure that the thermostats are set correctly for the best savings.

You can also make a rotation for extra frugal money saving activities, such as being in charge of locating yard sales and organizing the family to attend them, thinking of new free family activities and entertainment and coming up with new budget friendly tasty meals.

Along with the assignments, make sure to have regular family meetings in order to give all of you a chance to brainstorm new ideas, talk about what frugal efforts aren’t working for your family and deciding what to do with all of the money you are saving!

With everyone working together, you are bound to get more accomplished than you would with only one person leading the charge.
