Well, it finally happened. I had to upgrade something that has been a constant companion for the last almost six years. My laptop.
My laptop, dear old friend, has been through so much with me. As a work at home freelance writer and content manager, my laptop has seen heavy usage on a pretty much daily basis. The old girl just wasn’t strong enough anymore.
After much debate and hemming and hawing, my husband and I decided on a new model. At the store, I opted for the initial set up that comes free with the purchase. During the set up, I learned some new things, such as the mistakes that I was making in taking care of my old laptop, regarding battery usage and carrying the thing around the house while the disk was still spinning. A battery should last about seven years, I learned. I was getting about 2 years out of mine. And, I may have shortened the life of my laptop by not letting it spin down before moving it.
The point of all of this is that it is really worth the time to learn how to take care of our things. This way they can last longer and save us money in replacement costs. I’ve started paying more attention to care guidelines and instructions now. For example, the material in some of my workout clothes will last longer if I don’t use fabric softener when I wash them. Who knew? The manufacturers that put this information on the care label.
So many things in our home and our life can save us money when we take care of them properly, from big things such as our cars and homes to little things, such as our jewelry and carpets. it makes a lot of sense to educate ourselves when we make a new purchase, read those manuals and ask questions.
