You can greatly reduce the amount you spend on disposing of your garbage with some simple ideas.
In the town we live in, garbage pick up is not part of the normal municipal service, so we are left to pay for our own garbage pick up service. Of course, there is only one company that comes to our area, so we are pretty much at their mercy. I think they know this. Just the other day, we found an envelope in our mailbox that was pre-stamped to make it easier to leave them a nice big cash tip. The neighbors tell us that $100 at Christmas is expected by them. I’m sure they deserve the money, but wow! That seems like a lot.
One enterprising neighbor told me that he has greatly reduced the cost of his garbage disposal. he shared some of the methods he uses and the ideas behind them. So of course, I asked him if I could share those same tips with you.
First of all, instead of paying for a service, he bags his garbage and takes it to the dump himself. He is charged a very minimal amount per bag, which ads up to about $45 for an entire year. Obviously, the less garbage he generates, the money he will pay. This leads us to the next set of tips below.
Secondly, he recycles whatever he can and seldom buys anything that contains packaging that can’t be recycled. Recycling pick up here in our town is provided by the town itself (through our taxes), so the more he can recycle instead of throwing it away, the better.
Thirdly, he had a compost pile for items such as orange peels, apple cores, leftover vegetables, etc. This eliminates some of his garbage. He uses egg shells and coffee grounds in his garden.
