Saving Money on Health Food and Vitamins

Shopping at Walmart and using coupons doesn’t always work when it comes to purchasing health food. Although there may be a stray coupon here and there to help, most of the time you can’t take advantage of the typical grocery savings methods when you shop for health food and vitamins.

Just because normal savings methods don’t work doesn’t mean that you can’t utilize other tricks that will help you save. Here are my tips.

Let us take a look at vitamins. These can be pretty expensive. My husband’s vitamins cost more than $25 a month. Because they are recommended by his doctor, we feel it is important that he continues to take them. One thing that I recently found out is that in some cases, your doctor may be able to write a prescription for your vitamins, which means that co-payment aside, they should be covered by your insurance.

How about those whole grains and other foods? Well, we typically don’t think about purchasing health food in bulk, but the opportunity is usually available. Check with your local store to find out if you can purchase items in bulk. They are usually more than happy to lug out a bag of flour or a case of food for you and pass on a bulk discount.

The other thing you should do when you visit the store for your health food is to ask if there are any close outs. Health food can sometime get a bit trendy, and therefore there are items that just didn’t catch on. You may be able buy up all of these close out items for a deep discount. The store will be happy to get the shelf space, so they should be willing to give you a good deal.

Finally, ask if your favorite health food store or vitamin store has a mailing list. If they do, sign up. You may be able to get a newsletter that tells you of upcoming deals or new products.
