Saving Money on Sugar

Did you know that certain sugar can cost twice as much but be basically the same thing? No, I’m not talking about raw sugar or exotic gourmet sugar, I am just talking about the stuff that you would normally find in the grocery store.

Sugar is one of those staples that seems to have gone up quite a lot in the last few years. I remember being able to buy a five pound bag of sugar for 79 cents. Now, it seems, that same bag sells for $1.79!
Here are some ways that you can save on sugar.

You can make your own speciality sugar, which tend to be more expensive than the ordinary granulated sugar. Place regular granulated sugar in a food processor and pulse a few times to make superfine sugar. Pulse it a few more times to make powdered sugar. A vanilla bean placed in an airtight container of sugar will turn the sugar into vanilla sugar.

Buy your sugar in bulk at the warehouse store or at a specialty bakery store, and you will save quite a bit per pound. Buy generic sugar. Sugar is sugar and there isn’t much that can be made different.

Reduce the amount of sugar that you use. I’ve reduced sugar in baked good by about 25 percent, and I haven’t noticed any difference. In fact, when I reduce sugar even further, my family seems to like the cookies better. They have more texture and aren’t so super sweet. Start out by reducing the sugar by 10 percent and keep going until you notice a difference.

Keep a price book to note the price of sugar. Make sure to stock up when it is on a good sale. Sugar can be kept for a long time in an airtight container, as long as it isn’t subjected to a lot of humidity.
