Saving Money on Summer Fun

A new report claims that this year’s summer vacation could cost a family of four 30 to 60 percent less than last year. Too bad the deals are being offered at a time when most families are tightening their purse strings more than ever before. Still, if you are planning to take an annual summer trip with the kids, and you are on a budget, some of the following deals may be too good to pass up:

FREE EATS AT DISNEY WORLD

Disney World is once again helping cash-strapped families. The resort’s unprecedented “buy four nights, get three free” deal is being replaced with another discount. The new fantastic deal: Free dining for the entire family when you buy a five-night package. The package includes hotel accommodations plus six-day theme park passes.

The Magic Your Way dining plan typically costs $40 per adult per day and $11 per day for children 3 to 9, or roughly $102 per day for a family of four. With the new free dining deal that’s on the table, that same family of four can save more than $600. The package includes one table-service meal, one counter-service meal, and one snack per person, per day. Disney is also allowing you to use the deal to book character breakfasts and dinner shows at Disney World.

The six-day/five-night package, which includes hotel accommodations and park passes, starts at about $1,400 for a family of four staying at one of Disney’s Value Resorts. The free dining plan is also available with a five-night/six-day package at any Moderate Resort (though the price goes up to about $1,800 for a family of four) or Deluxe Resort (price start at $2,275) or Villa Resort (prices start at $2,585).

The catch: To take advantage of the package deal, which includes the free dining, you must book by June 21 and travel between August 16 and October 3, 2009.
