Saving Money on Ziploc Plastic Storage Bags

Plastic bags are easily one of the most awesome ways to store freezer meals, however they can get expensive if you are constantly buying them. I do not use my freezer storage bags exclusively, I intermix them with other items. However, even with using several options, I need to find ways to save money on the baggies because we use them for other things and they get used a lot. Here are a few easy ways to save money on plastic storage bags.

Rinse, Reuse, Repeat

A simple method of prolonging the life of your dollars spent on plastic storage bags, is to reuse them. Clean them out thoroughly after each use. Just be gentle and if a bag does develop a rip, tear or hole, dispose of it. Note: Do not reuse bags that have had raw meat stored in them, and insure that each time you clean them, you use an anti bacterial soap and clean them well.

One a Penny, Two a Penny

Saving money at the grocery store is a specialty of mine as most of you know. You can save money on plastic storage bags by clipping coupons, watching sale fliers for ads, and stocking up when these sales occur. You can check out the deals forum or deals blog here at families.com for sales and other useful information when trying to bargain shop.

Double Up

You can purchase Ziploc and other plastic storage bags from the dollar store. However, typically the other plastic bags are not as “good” as the Ziploc or Glad brand. So here’s what you do. Place the contents of your meal in one of the cheaper, no name brand bags. Then place the entire thing inside a Ziploc or Glad storage bag. First, the doubling of the two will help prevent freezer burn, especially if you work hard to get as much air out as you can, but in addition, you can reuse the expensive bags many, many more times. Even with meat because you will have it sealed in the cheap ones first.

I really hope these ideas help and that you can figure out a way to not only save money on your meals with freezer cooking, but on different storage methods as well.
