Saving on Tropical Escapes

Well, I’m sure reservations to Hawaii will increase exponentially after last night’s Pro Bowl telecast. The football contest is more of an extended commercial for the islands than an actual competition between AFC and NFC players.

Not that I am complaining. After all, I didn’t tune in to watch grown men throw around the pigskin. I just wanted to see shots of the sun-kissed shores of my motherland.

Last night I got caught up in the moment and blogged about taking a trip to Hawaii and other tropical destinations. However, I neglected to address the cost involved when you jet-off to the sun and the sand. The bad news is that a vacation to an exotic locale is typically more expensive than taking a family trip to a neighboring state. The good news is that there are a number of money-saving deals out there which allow you to preserve your bank account while you are visiting paradise:

Group savings: If you are traveling with six or more people, you may qualify for a group deal. Many travel companies offer discounts to large groups that book together. Savings range between 10 to upwards of 25 percent off rack rates.

Package deals: Also known as “bundling,” these deals combine flight, hotel and rental car fees, so you pay one reduced rate for all aspects of your tropical getaway. In some cases, you can save up to 60 percent on airfare and hotel accommodations compared to what you would have to shell out for individual portions.

All-inclusive: This is one of the simplest ways to save on a warm weather escape. All-inclusive resorts, such as Sandals or Couples, charge one price for hotel accommodations, meals, beverages, activities, tips, and in some cases, air and ground transportation. In order to get the most bang for your buck with this deal, it’s a good idea to travel off-season. When occupancy numbers are down, all-inclusive resorts traditionally offer deep discounts to entice guests to make the trip to paradise.
