Don’t throw those dull scissors away! Here are two tricks to help get them back into action.
At my house, we go through kitchen scissors like juice boxes. The scissors are constantly being snatched from the little knife block where they rest and pressed into service all over the house.
When my husband needs to cut a wire and doesn’t have his knife handy, he reaches for the kitchen scissors. If my son has cutting homework and is too “tired” to go all the way over to his desk to get his scissors, he takes mine.
And of course, I use them for all sorts of things from cutting open a bag of fruit to clipping coupons. needless to say, my scissors get dull very quickly.
It was by accident that I discovered a great and easy way to sharpen the scissors. I was working on cleaning up the built-in wooden cutting board in the kitchen and needed a few new piece of sandpaper. So I used my kitchen scissors to cut them from a larger sheet. The next time I went to use the scissors, they cut through paper just like butter! What an easy fix, and a very nice discovery for me.
I mentioned this discovery to a friend who told me that she used a piece of aluminum foil to sharper her kitchen scissors. She take a piece of the foil and folds it over and over into a square. Then she cuts through the square a few times, and the scissors get sharpened.
There are probably fancy devices to buy that will sharpen the scissors, but since I am not a professional chef with professional knives, I couldn’t justify buying a sharpening kits. I know in the old days (and maybe even today) people took their scissors to a professional to be sharpened. But the sandpaper trick (and I will try the foil trick) seemed to work just fine for me and my household.
