School’s out for the summer; time to savor the season beloved by kids and parents alike.
Summer’s lazy days are highlighted by picnics, beach bonfires, backyard barbeques, stargazing and firefly catching. There’s no shortage of outdoor activities to choose from in order to max out your summer fun. However, there are ways you can enhance the popular season.
The following projects are simple ways you can infuse a little whimsy into your sunny summer days:
PICNIC POT
This craft is easy enough for kids to make on their own. All you need is a medium to large size terracotta pot and little plate to sit under it. Your kids can decorate the pot with craft paint, stickers, gemstones, or glitter. Another option is to decoupage photos of your family participating in various summer activities. If you decide to paint the pot, it’s best to use acrylic paint, and then spray it with a coat of clear varnish to keep your decorative touches in place. If you are working with young children, consider tracing their hands around the perimeter of the pot or placing their hands in paint and letting them stamp their prints directly on the pot. Once you are done embellishing the outside of the pot, fill it with napkins, utensils, condiments and other items that you typically use at a picnic.
CORN ON THE COB CUPCAKES
Ingredients:
White and yellow jelly beans
Vanilla cupcakes
White frosting
White decorating sugar
Yellow Starburst candies
Corn holders
Directions:
Bake or buy 24 vanilla cupcakes.
Top cupcakes with a layer of white frosting.
Add a row of jelly beans on the frosted cupcakes. Alternate the colors so the jelly beans look like corn kernels.
Sprinkle decorating sugar on top of the cupcakes to mimic salt.
To make candy butter pat, microwave one yellow Starburst in the microwave for about 10 seconds, and then stretch it into a melted butter shape.
Place the candy on top of the cupcake.
Add a corn holder to each end of the cupcake, and serve.
