Okay, so you might expect a cemetery, especially at night, to be a bit spooky. But, some say that Union Cemetery in Easton, Connecticut is especially full of unexplained phenomena.
The cemetery dates all the way back to the 1600s, so there is a lot of history there. Of course, the cemetery is closed after dark and the Easton Police regularly patrol it, but that doesn’t stop curiosity seekers from breaking the law.
Visitors have reported taking photos of orbs, light rods, and ectoplasmic mists. There is one apparition, the White Lady, who many people have reported seeing over the years. It is believed that the first sighting of the White Lady at the Union Cemetery occurred some time in the 1940s. Since then, visitors have claimed to have photographed and even videotaped her.
Of course, there is a story that goes along with the White Lady. Most people who claimed to have seen her describe her as having long dark hair covered in a white bonnet. To add to the nickname, she is always seen wearing a white nightgown. She does wander out of the cemetery from time to time, having been seen on Route 59 or 111.
Now, here’s the really spooky part. . .people claim to have accidentally hit the White Lady. However, they never see her after hitting her and there is never any damage to their car except in the case of an off duty fireman. In 1993, he was driving the ten miles of road between the Union and Stepney Cemetery when he drove through a reddish glow. He claims that after driving through the glow, he looked over to see a farmer with a straw hat sitting next to him! He looked up to see the White Lady in front of the car with her arms reached out towards him. Slamming on his brakes, he heard a thud. After he stopped, the farmer was gone without a trace. There was a dent in his car, but the White Lady was no where to be found.
If you are driving past the Union Cemetery and don’t see the White Lady, you may see Red Eyes. Many that have visited the cemetery claim to have seen red eyes looking at them through the darkness. Some believe this may be the ghost of Earle Kellog, who was killed across the street from the cemetery or another man, who is said to have given his name through EVP (electronic voice phenomenon), that was killed by a drunken driver.
Lorraine and Ed Warren wrote the book “Graveyard: True Hauntings from an Old New England Cemetery” about their experiences and research in Union Cemetery.
