My child will be entering first grade this year. I love the first few years of elementary school. The kid in me loves the stickers, the hands on activities and the fun. However, it is a time for developing a basic foundation for serious learning. It is most likely the first year your student will have a schedule to follow and more courses on her plate. Here is an example of my first grader’s schedule. I am not an expert but sometimes it is helpful to see someone else’s basic outline. I know I have gleamed quite a bit from looking over other homeschooler’s schedules.
First Grade:
English: English will include spelling, copywork, narration, grammar and reading. Lessons are daily. We being with copywork move onto our read aloud then narration and finally we study grammar and phonics. We are laid back but follow an outline. Our main focus this year is developing a good reader as that is her weak point. Everything we do in English will center on her phonics and reader books so it all reinforces each other.
Math: We spend 20 minutes daily on math.
Science: We spend 20 minutes one day on a science lesson and about 20-30 minutes on another day doing lab work.
History: Combined with geography we spend 20 minutes twice a week.
Geography: Combined with history.
Art: Once a week for an hour at a homeschool co-op class.
Ballet: Once a week for 45 minutes.
I incorporate many hands on activities and games for each subject save art and ballet. I also focus on our read aloud or another story book over a week to develop some fun lessons to tie into other subjects. Since I follow a Charlotte Mason philosophy for scheduling the classes are not more than 20 minutes long. Fridays are used for fun days of exploration, nature study, art study and Shakespeare.
