School Starts Next Week

Where has the summer gone? It feels like Jessie’s last day of school was just yesterday. What happened to all the plans I had for summer? Why didn’t we do any of the things I thought would be fun to do?

School starts next week. I have mixed emotions about it. I love having my girls around. Jessie is the most delightful and fun little girl. She is a hoot to spend time with. She’s also a handful that would do better with more things to do. I don’t like over scheduling children; I like to give kids plenty of time to play and figure things out for themselves. Children need time to play by themselves and let their imaginations run free.

Texas has had its hottest summer in a number of years. We’re still having consecutive days with over 100-degree heat. It’s hot. It’s too hot to play outside. It’s too hot to want to do a lot of getting into and out of the car. We did get out for two weeks of swimming lessons each. We’ve had a few fun play dates. We did go swimming in our new pool. We’ve spent a lot of time staying home and playing inside. We’re ready for school to start.

When school ended in June one of the papers sent home in Jessie’s notebook talked about the new campus and what the school hours would be. School was to start at 7:45 and let out at 2:45. I am a nervous wreck for Jessie. She is only three and hasn’t spent all day away before. I am also nervous because Jessie isn’t potty trained. She managed most days to survive at school with a few pull-ups. How would she do with full-day school? School will have to deal with it.
