Score on Sports Vacations

Are you ready for some football? Whether you are a fan of college pigskin or you only have eyes for pro ball, you’d likely jump at the chance to see your favorite players in person.

So what are you waiting for?

September is one of the slowest times in the airline industry, which means fare sales are abundant. The downside is that you won’t find many of those deals if you are trying to fly into smaller college towns to watch your home team take on its bitter rival. Layoffs at major airlines have made booking some flights a bit trickier. Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelzoo can help you score some sweet deals on airfare and hotel accommodations. Also, from now through the end of the month, American Airlines is offering fares starting at $59 each way on more than 100 routes. In addition, AirTran just unveiled a slew of discounted fares. The lowest sale fares are on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sample fares include flights between Baltimore and Boston for $54 one-way and a flight between Milwaukee and Washington Dulles for $79 one-way. The deals are good through the first week in November, though you must purchase tickets seven days before travel.

If you are a college football fan looking to score big on airfare savings, then it pays to be flexible. This is especially true if your team plays in smaller cities. When searching for flights include several different airports and be ready to drive a bit to the stadium if need be. For example, if you are a tried-and-true Alabama Crimson Tide fan, consider flying into Atlanta as well as Birmingham. Likewise, if you are a devoted Badger fan and are dying to watch your boys duke it out at Camp Randall, you might consider flying into Milwaukee or Chicago and driving to Madison, Wisconsin, to save some serious dough. A few hours in a rental car will be well worth the time and expense, especially if you were planning to rent a car once you reached your destination city.
