Keywords Tag
Ok, we have covered the description tag, and how that is useful to you. Now let’s discuss the Keyword tag. The keywords tag contains words and phrases that the page creator (that’s you!) deem relevant. These words may be separated by commas, spaces, or both, it doesn’t really matter. The people who visit your site will not see this tag, and search engines do not display it, but many of them do READ the tag and that might give the page a slight boost in the rankings for the words that are contained in the tag.
You should try and create a tag that is ten words or less, and include only those words and phrases that are actually mentioned on your page. Try not to use any word more than three times in this tag. ALL of the words you put here should be relevant to your page. Don’t put “candles” in your tag when you’re actually selling widgets. You want keywords that users will look for. If you’re selling widgets, put widgets in your keywords tag. Look for future entries about keyword optimization to create this tag more successfully.
Once upon a time, these tags were crucial, but nowadays, since search engines are more sophisticated, and smarter, they aren’t as important, and don’t have a huge effect on how the search engine views your pages, so while it’s worth having, don’t fuss too much over it. A good keywords tag might help give you a small boost in rankings, but not nearly as much as other page content. Don’t spend hours agonizing over what is included in the tag.
Robots Tag
The robots tag is nothing to fuss over either. The robots tag simply tells the search engine robots to index the page and follow links, or not to. Most search engines assume that this can be done, but it doesn’t hurt to have the tag there just in case.
