Now that school is back in session, the weekends are precious for families who love spending time together. However, enjoying special bonding time shouldn’t put you in the poorhouse. To get the most bang for your buck, look for community events that are fun, kid-friendly, and cheap.
Here are a few affordable ideas:
Missouri: This weekend in St. Louis you and your children can take in the spectacular sights associated with the 40th Great Forest Park Balloon Glow and Balloon Race. On Friday, September 14th, take a stroll along Balloon Lane where you can get up close to dozens of brightly colored hot air balloons that are lit up for a special Balloon Glow. On Saturday, the event kicks off with a variety of amazing activities such as sky diver shows, live music, and a kids’ play area. The main event is the Balloon Race which takes place at noon when the Energizer Bunny “hare” balloon lifts off and is chased by more than 60 “hound” balloons.
Texas: The great state of Texas has huge events for little kids (and their parents). Next weekend is one of the largest: Western Days Festival. The massive country-themed event takes place in Lewisville, just 25 miles northwest of Dallas. In addition to the classic live country music concerts, gunfights, trick ropers, rodeo exhibitions, and the national tamale-eating championship, kids can also check out the Butterfly Flutterby exhibit. The special addition allows children of all ages to watch live butterfly releases and dress-up as the flying creatures as part of the festival’s kiddie and pet parade.
Rhode Island: If you live around Newport, consider getting into the seasonal spirit by visiting International Oktoberfest. The family-friendly cultural event celebrates the start of fall and German heritage. The fun includes plenty of food and beverages, as well as live music, dancers and yodelers. This year’s International Oktoberfest celebration takes place on October 6th and 7th.
